The project is featured in Series 3 of Channel 4’s Extraordinary Extensions hosted by Tinie Timpah which follows Kjerstin and Mikes journey building their new dream home, and includes the discovery of a derelict subterranean WWII bomb shelter at the bottom of the garden.

The design celebrates Kjerstin and Mikes Norwegian and Korean American heritage, reimaging an old B&B as an open and light-filled Scandi inspired smart home, set within an historic English context. The house sits within the Canterbury Conservation Area and the design adds a contemporary timber clad extension replacing many years of unsympathetic and impractical additions and alterations. The new extension combines oak cladding, statement brickwork and salmon orange windows to provide a modern addition that compliments the original house.

Inside, the whole house was stripped back to bare brick and timber frame before being completely replanned. The design focused on providing warmth and simplicity drawing on Scandinavian influences to create a calm and functional family home. The paired back material palette includes ash flooring and joinery, microcement, pink marble and a bespoke terrazzo created using the marble offcuts to compliment the salmon windows.

The project features a fully automated smart home system including integrated lighting controls, motorised blind controls, environment controls including heating and cooling, and a concealed speaker system. The project also delivers significant environmental upgrades to the old property, including new insulation throughout, triple glazed windows, solar panels and an air source heat pump.
