Broadstairs
House extension
A carefully considered contemporary extension that transforms a traditional 1930s house into a light-filled and connected home.
This 1930s detached house in Broadstairs had remained largely unchanged since its construction, retaining a traditional internal layout and a small, disconnected kitchen. The proposal replaces the existing detached garage and rear WC with a carefully considered single-storey extension, creating a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting space that forms the new heart of the home and establishes a stronger connection with the garden.
The extension wraps around the side and rear of the existing house, providing a new entrance and enlarged hallway and covered porch, while the existing kitchen is reconfigured to form a utility and a shower/WC. The new addition is shaped with a simple asymmetrical pitched roof that echoes the gable form of the existing property. A stepping form to the western edge reduces loss of daylight to the neighbouring property and creates a more intimate sitting area internally.
