The project reimagines the entire home using a natural material palette of timber and reclaimed brick. The design establishes a clear hierarchy between new and old with the original house insulated and clad in natural timber with black-framed windows, while the new lower and more expressive extension contrasts in black timber and orange windows, giving the home a contemporary beach house character.

The original house was impractical with small, dark rooms and a confused and disjointed layout, including a conservatory doubling as the front entrance. The floor plan is completely rearranged with the original house used for the more private night time spaces, while the new wraparound extension creates a bright, sociable family space and a new front door that offers a direct view through to the garden, restoring clarity and flow.

The design embraces an awkward triangular shaped corner plot using this constraint to create a striking form to the new extension. The stepping form ensures all windows face either forward or back, avoiding neighbouring properties while maximising daylight and creating a sense of openness. This stepping arrangement is amplified internally through vaulted ceilings that add height, light, and drama.

The project also delivers a comprehensive sustainable upgrade, including high-performance insulation throughout the old and new structures, solar panels, an air-source heat pump, and a low-carbon timber-frame extension, futureproofing the home for years to come.
