The brief was to improve the liveability of the 1930’s home and better connect the house with the garden. The main extension created a generous open-plan kitchen dining room, a social space for the family to be together. The side extension replaced an old garage to provide an additional downstairs bedroom/ study that sits as a pavilion within the garden.

The extensions are arranged around a rear courtyard providing a connection from both the kitchen and new bedroom out towards the rear garden. The new additional sits comfortably with the existing house but do not seek to match or replicate it. The higher pitched roof to the rear extension, which contains the main open plan space, is expressed with a vaulted ceiling and exposed roof structure to provide increased ceiling height and character to the key family space.

The design also addresses practical family needs with a new back door and utility space along with a downstairs WC and shower room to serve the new bedroom.
