Cattle Market

Sandwich

Conversion of the former HSBC bank to create 2 dwellings and a commercial unit.

The original building dates back to the 15th century, is grade 2 listed and located within the Sandwich conservation area. Whilst the building retains its original front street facing façade, Internally there is very little historic fabric remaining with the majority of the building, including a later 19th century addition, being replaced in the 1980’s with a concrete framed, flat roofed building and modern bank fitout.

Planning and listed building approval has been gained for the extension and conversion of the building to provide 2 characterful dwellings and a small ground floor commercial/ retain unit.

To the street the design is a sensitive renovation of an empty historic building that improves its appearance within the town. To the rear the design recreates the old form of the lost 19th century rear building, that was removed when the building was converted to a bank, with a new first floor upwards extension wrapping around an open internal courtyard.
